Cinema fans that have been anxiously awaiting the Pusan International Film Festival don’t have long to wait now. The festival will begin at Haeundae beach and Nampo-dong in Busan from October 8th to 16th, 2009. Marking the 14th anniversary, this year’s film festival will feature a number of newly released Korean films, as well as unsung heroes and hidden treasures from all over Asia. To cater to an ever increasingly diverse audience, the 14th PIFF has introduced a new ticket reservation system to meet the needs of international visitors. More than ever before, the festival will encourage philanthropic spirit by holding charity functions in partnership with "Good Neighbors" and "Community Chest of Korea".
This year's festival features an incredible 355 films from 70 countries, the most to date. Let's hit the road for the beautiful coastal city of Busan! |

Opening/Closing
This year's opening is “Good Morning President” directed by Jang Jin, a talented director and playwright, and staring Hallyu star Jang Dong-Gun, as a young president. The film tells a story of three different presidents forced to choose between politics and ethics.
The closing ceremony will showcase “The Message” co-directed by Chen Kuo-fu, a brilliant film director from Taiwan and Gao Qunshu, a young talented rookie.

① Johnnie TO: The Hood in the City - Urban Noir
Johnnie TO, an iconic figure in Hong Kong filmmaking industry, will be featured in 'Johnnie To, Special Event' allowing the audience to explore the present and future of Hong Kong cinema. A total of 9 films will be presented during the event and various events will be held in conjunction including a seminar looking into Johnnie TO's world of cinema; as well as an opportunity for the audience to meet Johnnie TO.

② Mabuhay! Pinoy Indi-Cinema! - History of Filipino independent films
Commemorating the 60th anniversary of amity between Korea and Philippines, PIFF proudly presents a special repertoire of Filipino independent films ranging from works of 1950s to the prize-winning film at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Filipino independent films have projected various cultural traits on the big screen in the search for Filipino identity.

③ Ani Asia! A Leap of Asia Feature Animation
This year, a special program will highlight 8 feature animations from Asian counties including Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. These films are getting recognition for their creative thinking and potential even when compared to the big animation powerhouses.

④ Dario Argento Falling in Giallo: Truth of the Invisible
In honor of the world-famous horror master, Dario Argento and his visit to Busan, the PIFF will feature five 'giallo' films. 'giallo', meaning the color yellow in Italian, represents a specific film genre that first appeared in the 1960s. It now refers to one of those graphic, slasher-type horror movies.

⑤ Ha Kil-chong and New American Cinema: Searching for New Language
In this special program, the audience can take in Hollywood classics that have never been featured at the PIFF. The repertoire includes the favorite American films of the late Korean director Ha Kil-chong (1941~1979). Director Ha passed away at the age of 38 after losing a fight with liver cancer, but not before studying filmmaking in America, directing many successful films and winning several awards. The program also features the films of Arthur Penn who taught director Ha in America.

The PIFF presents 10 special events including in-depth seminars/conferences, 'Master Class', and 'Hand printing ceremony'. In addition, outdoor events such as open concerts will be held throughout the duration of the festival.
